How To Fix A Leaky Refrigerator

There is water on your kitchen floor and you don’t recall spilling anything.  You’re clearly faced with two options…blame the kids (you don’t have kids?  Blame your spouse, perhaps?), or admit you may have a problem.

Your friends at Rush Appliance Services would love if you called them for any minor problem that you come across in your home, but they also care about those in their community.  Thus, below are a few tips for trying to remedy your leaky refrigerator on your own, before calling in for backup.

  • The first thing to do is check your drainage pipe (this is the pipe that allows condensation and other things to drain into your catch tray, which attaches to the bottom of your refrigerator).  Sometimes, for one reason or another (often due to moving the refrigerator), that drain pipe will get turned or moved and begin draining onto your floor, rather than into the catch tray.
  • If the pipe is draining into the catch tray, you can check for clogs.  There are a few ways to do this on your own.  The easiest is to blow air into the pipe.  This can be done with a can of compressed air, or even a bike pump.  This will sometimes dislodge any obstruction present.  If this doesn’t work, but you still suspect a clog, you can use an old wire coat hanger to carefully try and locate and dislodge a clog.
  • The final recommended self-fix is to take a vacuum and remove any dust bunnies that have latched onto the bottom of your unit.  This can be done with a tube attachment on your floor vacuum, or even a dust buster.  These dust bunnies can be harmful because they prohibit the warm air that typically flows under your refrigerator from circulating.  That warm air is used to dry the drainage that sits in your catch tray.  If that moisture is not dried, it can build up and eventually spill over onto your floor.\

Of course, these little tricks may not always solve your problem.  There could be some sort of internal problem with your refrigerator, causing it to leak.  At that point, it’s time to call a trained professional.  Fortunately for you, Rush Appliance Services can be at your home within 24 hours of your call and have your refrigerator operating as normal in no time.
